Dembele Coumare was my collegue in the Djenné  textile studio for ten years and he was the first person I knew in Djenné. THE MALIMALI STUDIOThere is a West African textile technique called Bogolan, which means ‘made by mud’ in Bambara, the Lingua Franca of Mali. I learned this lovely, totally organic technique which uses the dried leaves, berries and bark to dye the Malian cotton which is then painted with mud from the River Niger or its tributary the Bani, which flows past Djenné. With local helpers we set up the MaliMali textiles and clothing studio next to Hotel Djenné Djenno, we produced clothes, bags, scarves, furnishing fabrics and we sold it all mainly to the hotel guests in the Malimali shop at the hotel but we also had a shop in the capital Bamako for a time.
